You are in: TAYLORS BACKS LYFETAYLORS BACKS LYFE Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate, the company behind some of the UK’s leading Tea and coffee brands, has agreed a 3 year deal to back LYFE. by Cristina Talens, Ethical Trading Manager, Taylors For Bettys & Taylors, this project is about ensuring the long term sustainability of the smallholder groups we work with. We are an independent business in the global market - but we believe in quality and in rewarding efforts. We want to offer our support, guidance and assistance to create long-term solutions for our suppliers beyond tea and coffee. It is about an exchange of ideas, fostering relationships and bridging skills. This project has the potential to take smallholders beyond survival and into social and economic stability. Imagine you’re a leader of a cooperative who has had to deal with driving quality and consistency in the supply of your coffee when the market has just crashed, you can’t meet your Cost of Production and unscrupulous money lenders are banging at your door. Imagine meeting a contract deadline, when a Hurricane has just wiped out half of your crop, cut off your lines of communication and destroyed the only road out of the region. Think Honduras and Guatemala. Imagine pulling farmers together for their common welfare when you’re recovering from a civil war - Rwanda and Aceh in Indonesia . These are just some of the problems that smallholders organisations in developing countries have dealt with. As buyers we see how they’ve had to circumvent these difficult situations. Bettys & Taylors is a third generation family business with strong family values - we pride ouself on the long-term relationships we have with our suppliers. It is precisely for this reason that we decided to support the LYFE Initiative. The smallholders that we work with are amongst the most driven and most ingenious entrepreneurs in the world. They work with extremely limited financial and human resources and are able to operate within the most difficult political, environmental, social circumstances. They face daily constraints and challenges that would sink many business professionals. With the right entrepreneur partner and mentor smallholders can further their skills (business planning) and improve their management practices (training). They can also give you an insight into some of the biggest challenges you may ever face. This is a unique opportunity for successful entrepreneurs to truly put their skills and creative instincts to the test in what are often quite extraordinary business environments. | ||
